Message from the Chair of The Publishers' Association Of South Africa

In order to showcase the efforts of the publishing industry, we have compiled a second annual supplement to the Writings in Nine Tongues catalogue.

Commitment to publishing in the nine African languages of South Africa continues to grow steadily despite the economic downturn. Publishers continue to invest in the development and promotion of literature in these nine languages and this year, we have seen additional publishers enter this arena.

The interest in the catalogue, both locally and internationally, has been tremendous. The Publishers' Association of South Africa continues to receive accolades from a wide range of institutions, companies and individuals. The catalogue functions as a practical reference and marketing tool, and has also been found to be of great academic value.

The 2009 Supplement follows the format of previous years and presents an additional 432 titles across the following nine languages:
Size: 0.81MB |   isiNdebele
Size: 1.91MB |   isiXhosa
Size: 3.20MB |   isiZulu
Size: 1.55MB |   Sesotho
Size: 0.85MB |   Sesotho sa laboa
Size: 0.77MB |   Setswana
Size: 0.84MB |   Siswati
Size: 1.55MB |   Tshivenda
Size: 1.35MB |   Xitsonga
For ease of reference, the entries are further organised into the following genres:
  • Novels
  • Traditional literature
  • Short stories
  • Drama
  • Essays and prose
  • Poetry
  • Non-fiction
  • Dictionaries
The Publishers’ Association of South Africa is confident that the Writings in Nine Tongues catalogue, together with the 2008 and 2009 Supplements, provides a valuable reference for all those interested in literature in the nine African Languages of South Africa.

I would like to thank all the publishing houses who have participated in the production of the 2009 Supplement. They also deserve to be commended for their strong commitment to developing literature in these previously neglected languages. The combined efforts of the publishing industry in South Africa and the authors we work with serve to protect our rich heritage and will provide a legacy for future generations.
